SIMON KJAER

Simon Kjaer is a former Danish professional football player who in January 2025 announced his retirement. Until July 2024 he played for the Italian football club AC Milan and was Captain of the Danish national team from 2016-2024.

Simon Kjaer started playing football at an early age and in 2004 he became part of the youth team of the Danish Superliga club FC Midtjylland. He was part of the FC Midtjylland football academy, which was the first of its kind in Denmark. He became one of the first players to graduate from the academy. He played for FC Midtjylland until 2008, where he afterwards signed a five-year contract with the Italian club Palermo. With this transfer he kickstarted his professional career on the international football scene.

He has since played for international clubs like Wolfsburg, Fenerbahçe, Sevilla and his latest club A.C. Milan, which he signed a permanent contract for in 2020.

On the national level Kjaer has been part of the Danish national team for more than a decade. He has been captain of the team since 2016, leading the team to several notable achievements, including a quarter-final at the UEFA European Championship in 2012 and a EURO2020 semi-final. He has also helped Denmark qualify for several FIFA World Cups, including the 2010, 2018, and 2022 editions. In October 2023 he became the Danish player whom played most matches for the Danish national team, with 130 matches.
